We are encouraging all residents and local businesses to enter the Wildlife Gardens Awards and put wildlife at the heart of our outdoor spaces.
The Wildlife Gardens Awards are a free local awards scheme designed to encourage people to make space for wildlife by incorporating up to 24 simple, low-cost wildlife-friendly features in their outdoor space. The awards encourage simple actions such as avoiding pesticide use and providing a source of water. These simple features help to address biodiversity loss because we know that even a saucer of fresh water can help small mammals and insects to survive and thrive.
Anyone can enter the Awards, whether they have a balcony, courtyard, private garden or allotment; or by joining with others to create space for wildlife in communal spaces at work, school or where they live, and every space is important. Applications for the awards is open from 1st March to 31st July each year. More information, gardening tips and the entry form can be found here
“We know that people love their gardens, and they love wildlife. Who doesn’t want to see more hedgehogs or sparrows in their garden? But both of these much-loved species and many others are under threat and need our support. By including some or all of our simple low-cost features you can put wildlife at the heart of your outdoor space, so please have a look at the entry form on our website and make even more of a difference for nature. It really needs your help!
The Wildlife Gardens Awards play a significant local role in addressing the environment and climate crisis and are now included in the Council’s Biodiversity Action Plan, recognising the valuable role that urban gardeners can play in improving biodiversity across our Borough.
